The tense moment a producer shows the production team how Diana Ingram appears to cough to alert her husband Charles Ingram of the correct answers is shown on tonight's hotly-anticipated second episode of Quiz, based on the infamous 2001 Who Wants To Be A Millionaire coughing scandal.

As the team gather to review the footage the day after Major Charles Ingram, played by Matthew Macfadyen, wins the £1 million prize, they begin to share their suspicions over the surprise win.

One producer, who has spent the night reviewing the footage, points out how Diana, portrayed by Sian Clifford, coughs every time there is a right answer, while another member of the crew insists she can't detect a pattern. 

Charles, now 59, and wife Diana notoriously cheated their way to win £1 million on gameshow Who Wants To Be A Millionaire in 2001, and the couple were found guilty of deception in 2003.

Charles given a 20-month suspended prison sentence after it emerged that accomplice Tecwen Whittock, who was a future contestant, had coughed to indicate correct answers throughout the show.

The meeting , called by executive producers Mark Bonnar as Paul Smith and Elliot Levey as David Briggs, sees the team debating over whether they should block the cheque and call the police, as one senior producer argues: 'No, I just don't see it!'.

The producer who has been reviewing the footage all night, hits back: 'Then you hear it! The coughing!'.

She questions: 'Is that how loud it actually was?', as he responds: 'Yes! Well no, we've isolated them for you to hear. Listen - you can hear the coughs at the right answers!'.

The executive producer argues: 'Yes and I can hear them at the wrong answers too!'. 

The episode sees Charles first appearing on the show as an uncertain contestant, who barely makes it through the 'fastest fingers first' round to get onto the hot seat

Once there, the army major barely scrapes by the first few rounds, as suspicions are first aroused when Diana coughs loudly to get him through the famous Craig David question, to win £32,000

The crew then realise Diana's brother Adrian Pollock, played by Trystan Gravelle, was also there on the first night - despite studio rules stipulating you are only allowed one family member present.

Furthermore, the team discover that audience members are not checked for mobile phones, making it possible for them to look up answers during the show.

The Ingrams are seen taking their cheque to a hotel where they celebrate, but festivities are short-lived as they receive an unexpected visit from the production team the next morning as questions begin to arise amid their meeting. 

Just days later, the same day as the September 11 attacks in 2001, they are told police are investigating their win due to 'inconsistencies'.

Diana is seen arguing: 'I'm a school teacher and you're an army major. People like us don't deal with the police, this is Wiltshire!'.

The series which stars Matthew MacFadyen, Michael Sheen, Helen McCrory and Sian Clifford is written by award-winning James Graham and producers Dan Winch. 

The second episode of Quiz will air on Tuesday 14th April at 9pm on ITV
